Repurposed items
This photo marks the beginning of a photography endeavor I am currently engaged in, delving into the concept of breathing a “fresh life” into old items that might have otherwise been discarded or neglected. The notion sparked in my mind while pondering consumerism, a prevalent aspect of our society. Reimagining objects into something innovative not only shines a light on the possibilities of repurposing and recycling but also prompts viewers to reconsider their daily choices in using and disposing of items.
This is a hand-held steamer from the iconic 1960s. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I immediately envisioned its new life reimagined as a whimsical bubble gun. I also thought about the possibility of converting it into a charming air freshener, particularly appealing for those who appreciate its unique and vintage design.
Vintage shoulder breast drills are rarely used today, though many are available online for collectors. I quite like its design and saw a creative opportunity to repurpose one into a candlestick holder. While I could have modified the base for stability, I chose to showcase it authentically, embracing its vintage appeal.
If you happen to come into my house or studio while I am experimenting with various projects, you may find some rather unusual things happening all around. I simply enjoy being busy and constantly exploring new ideas and techniques. This is actually one of the aspects that I truly love about photography: the process involved in creating an image, often referred to as the behind-the-scenes work, is frequently the most exciting part, sometimes even more so than the moment when the photo is finally taken. I had considered the idea of using an iron in the kitchen more than once before I officially embarked on this particular project. I believed it could be useful in certain situations for either cooking some food or keeping it warm. So, I gave it a go! Don’t misunderstand me; I am fully aware of and supportive of innovation and progress. What you see here is an image that I created to stimulate our collective creativity. For instance, with some thoughtful modifications to the iron, could its plate perhaps be reconsidered as a clever warming food device?
This is a GENIE push button telephone of the 70s. Its oval shapes reminded me of an egg, and as soon as I saw it, I thought about how nice it would be to have the ability to convert it into a convenient egg peeler. I imagined inserting the cooked egg into the handset where the microphone is situated, and, with a “simple” mechanism, the egg would pop out completely peeled and ready to enjoy.
This is the SHURE 444 controlled microphone. It was specifically designed for radio communication. Unfortunately, it can no longer be repaired, so guess what…I decided to give it a new life! By looking at its shape I thought about transforming it into a garden sprinkler. The modification process is actually not so complex, allowing for an exciting new purpose for this vintage piece of equipment.
I quite like the distinct shape of many vintage items, and although, as I mentioned before, I am supportive of innovation and progress, I believe it is still a pity that so many beautiful vintage pieces are too often discarded and thrown away. Well, the positive aspect of this is that they are recycled, which is commendable, but on the other hand, we will inevitably be losing their unique shapes and the stories they carry. Here, I envisioned transforming an old vintage hair dryer into a portable, almost pocket-sized, popcorn maker. Would it really be useful? Well… at least for now, let’s take a moment to enjoy the visual representation of this imaginative idea.
